Virginia Sales Tax Holiday

Albemarle County, Virginia, August 2, 2023 — Steve Harvey, Republican candidate for Virginia’s 55th District for the House of Delegates, said that retail advertising will soon kick into high gear for back-to-school bargains. But, unlike in previous years, the real bargain for many families this year won’t be anywhere to be found.

“I find it simply astounding that legislators in the 2023 General Assembly failed to reauthorize and extend the popular Virginia Sales Tax Holiday,” said Harvey.

“No matter how you slice it, this falls disproportionately hard on low to middle-income families, especially single parents with children going back to school. I have no idea the mindset of the General Assembly and why they failed to extend this savings for all.”

Harvey points out that the annual tax-free holiday, enjoyed by Virginians every August since 2006, wasn’t just limited to school supplies.  Shoppers could stock up on household supplies, or could purchase new clothing or shoes, tax-free–with certain spending limits.

“And, as inflation continues to eat away at every dollar earned by Virginians, the challenge becomes a daily grind to find savings wherever possible. At a time when we’re told of a state surplus, one has to wonder what the rationale was for not giving Virginians a small tax break once a year,” Harvey said.

Harvey pledged that, if elected, restoring the Virginia Sales Tax Holiday will be a top legislative priority, and he looks forward to sponsoring a bill that would do so.
